Nonprofit PRO’s Unsung Hero 2017

Each year, nonprofit professionals are asked to send in nominations for who they think are the best of the best in the following categories: Nonprofit Professional of the Year, Lifetime Achievement, Executive of the Year, Board Member of the Year, Fundraiser of the Year, Marketer of the Year, Technology Professional of the Year, Unsung Hero and Rising Star.

Our President & CEO, Dee Mitten, was awarded the Unsung Hero award this year, and we couldn’t be happier!

You can see the list of awardees here: http://www.nonprofitpro.com/article/nonprofit-pro-announces-winners-2017-leadership-awards/

“The folks in the nonprofit sector are some of the most selfless, hard-working, dedicated and resilient individuals I know. They continue to put their best foot forward, while overcoming the challenging obstacles that come up on a daily basis—all with a positive attitude and a smile on their face,” Nhu Te, editor-in-chief of NonProfit PRO said. “Our leadership awards are a way for us to recognize those who work day in and day out to promote the social good of our communities.”

Dee constantly describes Waste Not as the community’s “best kept secret” and plenty of nonprofit leaders use this term to describe their organization. This was an accurate statement more than a decade ago; but over the past 15 years, Dee has changed everything. Now, not only do Phoenix-area people know about Waste Not, they appreciate the completely unique and valued space we hold in the continuum of feeding hungry people.

Notably – under Dee’s steadfast, strategic direction – Waste Not rescued and transferred a record three million pounds of food in 2016, which fed more than 50,000 Arizonans in need of life-giving food. But even after exponential growth in rescued fresh food and people fed every year in her tenure, you won’t find Dee resting on her laurels. As she so often reminds her staff, board of directors, and present and prospective donors, Waste Not’s work is far from done.

Congratulations to Dee Mitten!
